The Trip

voyage, the--the place a story or novel takes a reader; the journey of discovery made by awriter during the course of developing and telling a story;a destination neither reader nor writer expected at the outset.

The success of a novel or short story is in direct proportion to the destination at which the reader and writer are delivered at conclusion.

'journey of discovery' describes it perfectly.

as for the last two sentences of your post 'conventional wisdom', it's right up there on my bulletin board.

best to you.
